Workshops on the Development of the National Crime Prevention Strategy has Started
As part of the Project, work continues on the establishment of the National Crime Prevention Office. In this regard, five two-day workshops were planned to be held in order to receive the opinions and suggestions of the relevant law enforcement units, Ministry representatives, members of the Local Prevention and Security Board and representatives of the relevant non-governmental organizations engaged in crime prevention activities on the draft strategy.
The first of the workshops was held at Ankara Hilton Hotel on 1-2 June 2021. While approximately 30 participants took part physically in the workshop, which was held by taking the relevant precautions due to the Covid-19 epidemic, other participants, especially the International Experts of the Project, also participated online.
The workshop, which started with the opening speeches of UNDP Project Manager Eltaf Ersay and Ministry of Interior Department of Smuggling, Intelligence, Operations and Data Collection
(KIHBI) Department Head Gazi Levent Kurtoğlu, continued with Project’s Chief Technical Advisor Mr. Sebastian Roché’s briefing on the Project and his evaluations on the importance of the workshop. Morning session continued with, the presentations titled “The Purpose and Scope of the Workshop” by Can Umut Çiner and “The Main Points of the Crime Prevention Strategy” by Dominique Lapprand. In the afternoon session, group discussions were held on crime prevention.
The second day of the workshop started with Lapprand’s presentation on “Comparative Crime Prevention Strategies”. Afterwards, UNDP Specialist Mathieu Zagrodzki made a presentation on “Social Control and Crime Prevention: The Theory of Broken Windows”. UNDP Specialist Feridun Yenisey also contributed to the workshop, which he connected online for both days. The workshop, led by Çiner, continued with group studies under the titles of “Public Mechanisms for the Prevention of Crime” and “The Role of Education, Awareness, Deterrence and Social Environment in Crime Prevention” with the valuable contributions of beneficiary institution delegates.
It is aimed that the events will contribute to the finalization of the National Crime Prevention Strategy and presented to the Ministry of Interior.
